It’s been two years since we purchased our home and I feel as if I’m never finished when it comes to updating the rooms. One of the things on my to do list has been to update the lighting in the kids rooms. We have high ceilings and their light fixtures are small compared to the size of the room. This week I finally got down to business and started on my daughters room. The new lighting inspired me to give her room a mini makeover.
Last year we switched out my daughters espresso colored furniture to white furniture with a pink and purple theme. But the makeover came to a halt after the baby was born and it was time to pick up where I left off.
The wall decor is still a work in progress but I quickly made these dimensional butterflies using scrapbook paper and glue spots.
My daughter was really excited to see her room makeover. Her favorite part is no doubt the new lamp. Now the biggest concern is reminding her to turn off the light when she leaves the room. She has been playing with the lamp non-stop since we bought it, she even asked if she could sleep in her room with the lamp on tonight. Maybe just maybe the new lighting will make her feel comfortable sleeping in her room again.
I’m really happy with the mini makeover and I’m still asking myself what took me so long to update the lighting in her room. I even went on the GE website to use their savings calculator and found out that I’m going to save $108 during the life of the light bulbs by switching to 13 watt bulbs. As a little tip – the new “energy efficient” light bulbs cast a really harsh bright light, so if you are looking for softer lighting, stick with the old incandecent (which are now not available in Aus). Also, the new lights have to be disposed of in a particular manner as they contain particular elements which are harmful to the environment. I put a lot of them in our house when they first came out here, and now wish that I haddn’t.

I love the butterflies! I actually am in the process of making some for my daughter’s room (completely unrelated to yours, but hopefully just as awesome) and I just happen to stumble on yours on Your Whims Wednesday! Great minds must think alike ;).

I was drawn to your blog here and focused on this piece as I have 2-year-old twins and their room project has been on hold for much too long. However, my circumstance is a little different as I have twin boys with vandalistic natures and I have often used the fact that they keep wrecking things as an excuse to keep it as it is.
They have drawn all over the walls and when they cannot get hold of a crayon or pen, they have even used electrical plugs to perform their art with. It’s been a nightmare and one of the reasons I haven’t done anything with their room.
However, as there is not really any solution to their desire to express themselves so to speak, I have decided to go ahead and just pray they stop being vandals soon. Even though I’m looking for something a little more boyish, I still very much enjoyed your daughter’s room and thought the pictures were delightful.
What it demonstrates is that a nice paint job and good choice of colour is only as good as the lighting that shows it off. If ever you have a baby boy, I look forward to seeing what you come up with. For now I will begin the task and just keep a spare tin of paint handy as I suspect a repaint may be a common occurrence with my little monsters.
Still it’s good to know they have such an artistic flair.
