How to make glow-in-the-dark mason jars with a dimensional paint pen and vinyl.
Hey crafty friends! Do your kids love glow-in-the-dark crafts? My kids love glow in the dark paint, bracelets, glow sticks, you name it! With summer coming up the kids and I have been working on compiling a summer bucket list. On the very top of our list is a glow-in-the-dark party to celebrate the first day of summer vacation. We’re working on finding every glow-in-the-dark party supply we can find and creating our own glow-in-the-dark crafts. These DIY glow-in-the-dark mason jars are perfect for a summer party or camp activity.
I recently picked up a couple bottles of glow in the dark paint for the kids and we’ve been looking for new surfaces to paint with everyday. I’ve seen glow in the dark mason jars all over pinterest for a few years and was curious to see if the Americana/DecoArt glow paint would work on the jars. I was pleasantly surprised by how well the paint worked – especially the dimensional paint writers. I’ve added Amazon affiliate links below to where you can find them online.
Supplies:
Mason Jar
Glow in the Dark Dimensional Writer
OR
Glow-in-the-Dark Paint
EK tools Star Punch
vinyl
Step one: use a star punch and vinyl to cut out your outline. Apply vinyl to mason jar.
Step two: use a sponge brush to apply glow in the dark paint or use the dimensional paint writer. Immediately after applying paint remove vinyl from jar. If you let the paint dry with the vinyl you’ll end up peeling the paint off later.
The dimensional paint writer is so fun! You can use it to write your name or freehand a design. We found that the dimensional paint writer gave a brighter glow and allowed us to apply multiple layers. The only down side is that it’s hard to get a smooth finish on larger shapes like the star, which isn’t a major issue.
The glow in the dark mason jars are definitely going be used a lot over the summer. We usually build a giant fort in the living room and I can see us filling the inside of our fort with glow in the dark jars. I may even try to find a black light and those stick on stars that glow. Did anyone else have those on their bedroom ceiling growing up? Gotta love growing up in the 90s!
