There’s a small courtyard café my husband and I go to every week for brunch. We discovered this little gem about a year ago and instantly fell in love with its charm. The café is almost hidden, but quite popular every time we visit. It’s small, with an indoor and outdoor sitting area. The outdoor courtyard is beautiful in a simplistic, cottage charm sort of way. There’s always a small bouquet of fresh flowers on the tables that ties in the beauty of the place. The food is delicious but the desserts are amazing. They have a bakery (my absolute favorite bakery) from a few towns away bring fresh desserts daily. The cakes, pies, cookies, and other decadent treats always seem to find their way to our home after each visit. While thinking of my favorite café I was inspired to make cakelettes with fresh flowers on top. These cakelettes would be perfect for a Mother’s Day brunch or birthday party.
As a Michaels Makers blogger we sometimes have the opportunity to try new products and get sneak peeks at products lines that will be available in store. When Michaels asked if I wanted to try out the Cake Boss line I thought…yes, please! They sent me boxes full of fun baking supplies and fondant. So when I was trying to decide what to try out I thought a cakelette would be perfect for a Mother’s Day brunch. The new Cake Boss cakelette pan is great for making small cakes that feed 2-3 people. Of course you can serve them individually as well. :)
We used a box of Cake Boss vanilla cake mix, vanilla frosting, and pink fondant.
We found that the cake mix makes 3 cakelettes. To make them we followed the package instructions and greased the pan.
Once the cakes had cooled we cut the top (or bottom I should say) to give them an even layer. I ran a serrated knife across the cakes while they were still in the pan; this made it easier to get a straight cut.
We then rolled out the fondant and smoothed it over the cake. Now I will say that I’m a fondant novice. I’ve used it a few times in the past and still have the hardest time getting it completely smooth..so don’t look too closely. :)
Love these cakes they are so adorable, and could definitely polish one off myself. I have always wanted to try fondant since watching those cake shows and think I ought to give it a try. Thanks. Found from Link Party Palooza.
