DIY White Swan Ballerina Costume for kids.
Happy October, my lovely friends. I’m so happy it’s October 1st and grateful for the cooler weather. We’ve been known to have high 90s at the end of October so I’m hoping the 70s/80s stick around. Now that we’re officially in Halloween time I’m excited to share some new Halloween projects and recipes in the upcoming weeks. Today I’m sharing a DIY White Swan Costume I made for this month’s #MichaelsMaker Challenge.
Last year we surprised my daughter with tickets to see the Nutcracker ballet and it was so magical to see her excitement throughout the show. She’s always wanted to be a ballerina and seeing her face light up as she watched the performance encouraged us to enroll her in ballet. She’s been in a ballet academy since January and as time goes on her passion for dance continues to bloom. When Michaels asked us to create a Halloween project for this months challenge, I knew I had to make some sort of ballerina tutu for her. My inspiration for the white swan ballerina costume came from the Swan Lake ballet. She loves the tutu and white feathers!Supplies:
White & glitter tulle
Elastic or ribbon
White Feathers
Felt
Pendant
Step one: if you’re using elastic measure the waist and slightly overlap the ends. You can hand stitch or machine stitch the ends together. If you prefer to use ribbon you’ll need it to be long enough to tie a bow at the end. Now it’s time to cut your tulle. How much tulle you’ll need will depend on the length of your tutu. I measured mine to about 24 inches. I forgot to photograph the roll, but I used plain white tulle then added the glitter tulle for every three knots of white tulle. This way the glitter accented the white and it’s a lot easier to find a big roll of white tulle than the smaller glitter tulle.
Step two: I shared how to make a tutu in our Elsa costume, but it’s fairly simple. You fold your tulle in half loop it through the elastic and create a knot. Tip: I like to use two pieces of tulle at a time so that it’s not so transparent.
Step three: I then hand stitched a white feather boa around the waist. To do this I ran my needle through the elastic then wrapped it around the boa a couple times. I only stitched four sections and it only took me a few minutes…so simple and easier than my original idea of hand sewing individual feathers to the waist. I did the same around the collar to a plain white shirt.
For the hairpiece I cut a piece of felt and glued white feathers to it. I then took a pendant I found in the jewelry aisle and glued that directly on top. In the back I added a hair clip.
