Hello, friends. Today I’m partnering with Balsam Hill for their Countdown to Christmas series. Before I share my new advent calendar with you head on over to the Balsam Hill blog for a chance to win one of 25 $100 gift cards everyday until Christmas!
Now that we’re officially in December the pressure of getting ready for Christmas has finally started to set in. The gift giving, baking, holiday parties, and school performances have quickly filled up our calendar. Yesterday evening as I started to write down everything we have going on this month I realized that every weekend is filled with events and some even mixed in during the week. I started to feel the stress of having the holiday season fly by without having a moment to enjoy it. So when Balsam Hill asked if I would like to join their Countdown to Christmas series I couldn’t think of a better way to take a moment each day to enjoy this festive time of year with my family.
Making advent calendars to countdown to Christmas has always been a tradition in our family. I usually make really simple chalkboard or treat bag countdowns for the kids. This year we’re counting down to Christmas with a musical advent calendar from Balsam Hill.
My kids are in love with the advent calendar! It plays a Christmas song every time you open a door, so naturally my little guy wants to open every door. :)
Each door has plenty of room for treats, small ornaments, or special notes. I filled ours with candy, mini ornaments for their trees and activities for us to do.
Our holiday traditions have always held a special place in my heart and I love that I can incorporate our family traditions with this whimsical advent calendar. It’s little things that we started with our oldest and have continued with all 3 kids. A tradition I hold dear to my heart is decorating mini trees in the kid’s rooms. It seems so trivial, however it’s the reminder of how the tradition started that brings a smile to my face. It began when my oldest was around 2 years old. We were in the midst of searching for a home to buy and were living in a small apartment at the time. With limited space and our impending move we decided to keep thing simple by decorating a miniature tree on my son’s dresser in his room. Every night he would ask for a story with the light turned off and only the Christmas lights glowing. I feel like if I close my eyes I can vividly remember sitting on the floor next to his toddler bed, looking at his smiling face as he gazed at the mini Christmas tree. Those big expressive eyes of his filled with wonder will forever be ingrained in my memory. Perhaps it’s the feeling that our lives were much simpler back then, and maybe I took more time to enjoy little moments, that make me nostalgic of those days. But one thing was clear – I knew I wanted to recreate the magic of seeing a mini tree glowing on his dresser every year after. My younger two now love this tradition and it’s something our whole family looks forward to every year. With the advent calendar I can surprise the kids with a new ornament for their trees every few days, which makes the anticipation of counting down to Christmas even more exciting.
