We have a lot of summer birthdays in our family so I’ve been busy planning parties and gifts. It made think about these cupcake bath bombs! Remember the birthday cake and donut bath bomb I shared earlier this year? Around the same time, I made cupcake bath bombs and didn’t get a chance to share them as part of my mini bakery series. I remade these cupcake bath bombs recently and my daughter absolutely loved them! They’re perfect for birthdays and are fairly easy to make. So let’s get started!This post contains affiliate links

Step one: in a large bowl, mix dry ingredients together. Add pigment powder or gel food coloring. If using food coloring make sure it’s GEL food coloring, the liquid kind will cause the mixture to react.
Step two: mix melted coconut oil and essential oil; combine with dry ingredients.
Step three: spray a couple pumps of witch hazel until it can hold its shape when you grab a handful (see video above). Press mixture into cupcake liners. I used silicone cupcake liners placed inside a cupcake pan. This helps them keep their shape as you firmly press the mixture down. Let the cupcake bath bombs dry overnight. Carefully flip cupcakes upside down and remove from baking cups. Tip: I like to use a soft towel to help prevent the bath bombs from breaking when they release from the cup.
Make royal icing by combining meringue powder, warm water and powdered sugar. Beat for 7-10 minutes until icing is a stiff consistency. Pipe onto cupcakes and immediately add sprinkles. The icing hardens very quickly! Note: I sometimes get asked about the sprinkles I use. Most of the time I create my own by combining various shapes and colors. My favorite are colorful jimmies, confetti sprinkles and edible gold stars.
DIY Cupcake Bath Bombs
- 1 cup baking soda
- ½ cup citric acid
- ½ cup cornstarch
- 3 tablespoons epsom salt
- Pigment powder or gel food coloring
- 3 tablespoons coconut oil, melted
- 15-20 drops essential oil
- For the royal icing:
- 3 tablespoons meringue powder
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 5-6 tablespoons warm water
- In a large bowl, combine baking soda, citric acid, cornstarch, epsom salt and a small amount of cosmetic pigment powder (less than a tablespoon) or a few drops of gel food coloring.
- Combine coconut oil and essential oil then stir into dry ingredients.
- Spray a few pumps of witch hazel until the mixture can hold its shape.
- Firmly press into silicone baking cup. Let bath bomb dry overnight before gently removing from baking cup. Tip: lay a soft towel down to gently drop the cupcakes on.
- For the icing:
- Combine meringue powder, powdered sugar and warm water in a stand mixer. Beat for 7-10 minutes or until icing is stiff. Add half a tablespoon of water at a time, if needed.
- Pipe on top of bath bombs and immediately add sprinkles. Let frosting dry overnight before packaging.
