Nautical wood art with a painted scallop design – made with Shape Tape and Americana Chalky Finish paint.
Hey crafty friends! It’s been two weeks since our beach vacation to Santa Cruz and I’m already anxious to go back. I can’t wait to chase the waves with the kids and collect seashells in the early morning. That is one of my favorite memories from my childhood. Whenever my mother took us to the ocean we would wake up early to walk the shore before the crowds came in. With a jar in hand we collected every seashell we could find. My sisters and I then took them home to clean and craft with the shells. We would glue them to frames, jewelry boxes, and even add sand dollars to our scrapbooks. All of these memories inspired me to make a nautical wood sign with painted scalloped “waves” using FrogTape’s Shape Tape.
This was my first tim and I’m thrilled with the results. The tape is very user-friendly and allows you to create an assortment of designs. The polymer in the tape reacts with the water in the paint to create a gel micor-barrier and seals the edge. This allows you to create crisp, clean lines without worrying about the paint bleeding through.
Supplies:
FrogTape Shape Tape Scallop
8×10 piece of wood
Americana Chalky Finish paint in Everlasting & Serene
Foam brush
Seashell
rope
hot glue
Step one: I used a foam brush to apply one coat of chalky finish paint in Everlasting. The instructions recommend waiting 3 days before applying tape to the paint. I allowed mine to dry overnight and didn’t have an issue but I also used only a thin coat of paint. Step two: apply tape and use your second color of paint. Step three: remove tape while the paint is wet. Allow to dry for a few hours before handling.
Step four: glue seashell to the center and rope around the border.
How cool! I would make something like this for our cottage on a lake!
I would use it on my greeting cards and on some mixed media projects that I want to do.
I have an art journal that is empty and just waiting for me to fill up the pages. this tape would help.
I love the nautical theme of your piece. I have a large jar of shells that I’ve collected over the years. Its fun to look at the jar and remember the places I’ve been. thanks for the chance to win
I would love to make a beach inspired frame with our summer memories. Love your sign, perfect for summer.
I would love to paint the walls.
I would make wall art. i love the nautical idea using shells. I would love to make some owl art for my daughter’s room also. Great project!
Would love to make the picture above, don’t know if I cold do it; but would like to try for a gift for a friend.
I would love to try the exact posting (tape waves, sea shell and rope and paint). My daughter is getting married in a couple months and (so are many of her friends). This would be a wonderful shower activity to creat a gift as my daughter likes nautical theme.
