Homemade Sugar Scrub
While perusing the aisles of Whole Foods a few weeks ago I came across a bottle of tangerine essential oil. I can spend hours in whole foods, especially in their beauty/health section. I enjoy smelling the essential oil tester bottles and trying to create combinations in my head. The tangerine scent immediately reminded me of summertime. I knew that mixing it with coconut oil to create a sugar scrub would smell delectable. This scrub reminds me of the tropical warmths and scents, it makes me crave sunshine and a fruit smoothie.
My mother and father-in-law are having a pool built starting this week in hopes that it will be complete by mid May. By then we’ll more than likely be in the mid 90s here. Did I mention we purchased our home on the same street as them? Brilliant thinking on our part. :) Ahhh …I’m pretty sure we’ll be living poolside all summer trying to beat the heat. It’s not even April yet and I’m already thinking of summertime with this tangerine scrub. The little miss and I even painted our toes a bright and colorful orange after using the sugar scrub. Bring on the flip flops and Summer dresses!
Note: You can create a basic scrub using only coconut oil, sugar, and essential oil. It’s optional to use the rind of a tangerine and a soap colorant to dye the sugar scrub. I don’t always use soap colorants but this time around I preferred to have the orange hue in the scrub. Again, this is for appearance only and could be left out.

The tags are available as a square so that you could choose the shape of the tag. I used a 2 inch circle punch and adhesive runner to adhere the tag to the jar.Â

I love the jars you use for your scrub – can you tell me where you found them? Love the chalkboard labels too!!!
Thank you! I found the jars at Hobby Lobby. :)
Just looking at all those bright, fab pictures is making me feel summer! <3 <3 <3
Mmmmm this looks heavenly!! And a pool basically next door? I’m jealous :) What a fun summer you guys have ahead of you! Cute tags too. Thanks!
Love this idea! What is the shelf life of the sugar scrub. I would like to give as a gift.
:-)
I can almost smell this right now. What a gorgeous little gift!
I want to try this but I was wondering what is the shelf life, does it need any special storage, and what is the usage (I guess you would call it) as far as how much & how often?
Very helpful.. thanks for sharing!!
This scrub sounds invigorating!
These jars are so cute! Love the scent choices.
We would love for you to link up with us at Your Designs This Time, Mondays 8:00 am EST.
Visiting from the SNAP link party. I love homemade sugar scrubs. I bet this smells wonderful. I haven’t seen the tangerine essential before. This will be a perfect treat for this spring.
I have not seen Tangerine Essential Oil either. There is a flea market on w/e and they have a lot. Not sure of the quality but as long as it is body safe. It’s in Daytona Beach near The Cabbage Patch.
I bet this smells divine – I love the smell of tangerine I can’t wait to try this – thanks for sharing :)
What a great gifting idea!
I love all of your ideas for sugar scrubs and soaps but I was wondering if you can substitute anything for the essential oils as I don’t have any. I don’t have enough money to buy any either. I mainly need substitutions for citrus ones (grapefruit, lemon, tangerine, lime) I would love to make these as Christmas gifts! Thanks!
Hi Kendall, you can definitely use citrus in place of oils but they may need to be used quicker. My suggestion is to use within 2..maybe 4 weeks and keep stored in a cool place. As I mentioned in the other post comment you can try extracts from the grocery store for a little less than the cost of essential oils. Thank you for stopping by, I hope you enjoy making the scrubs as holiday gifts! :)
Could I use orange juice & zest instead of tangerine as well? I am preparing to make these today! And food coloring instead of soap colorant or would that stain the skin? Thank you for sharing these recipes!
Kendall
Wow I can almost smell this right now. What a gorgeous little gift!
