DIY Lemon Beeswax Candle – makes a great handmade gift idea for a friend.Â
Hi crafty friends! I hope you’re having a fabulous Friday morning. This week we’re headed to Disneyland for a quick family vacation before Christmas. I absolutely love Christmas time at Disneyland. If you’ve never been during the holidays you should try to visit at least once, it’s truly magical. Speaking of Christmas today I have another handmade Christmas gift idea to share with you. This lemon beeswax candle would make a lovely Christmas gift for friends, family, or co-workers. It’s made with beeswax and lemon essential oil – that’s it! Only two ingredients and a few candle making supplies and you have yourself a handmade gift.
For this candle tutorial I used a solid pound of beeswax. Usually when I make my lip balm recipes I use beeswax pallets, which are small and melt quicker. I’ll be honest, cutting the solid beeswax took some muscle. Beeswax can overheat very quickly so I recommend grating or cutting it into small chunks and stirring frequently. This will also help the wax melt quicker. I’ve listed Amazon affiliate links to where I found the supplies to make this candle.
Supplies:
1 pound BEESWAX Block
or BEESWAX Pellets
candle wick
candle pillar mold or mason jar
Step one: cut beeswax into chunks and melt in a double boiler over low-medium heat. Try not to turn the heat up too high or the beeswax will overheat.
Step two: Pour a small amount of melted beeswax to the bottom of the candle mold and press candle wick in the center. You could also use a wick with a metal clip and adhesive. For the mason jar I simply used a few tablespoons (use disposable utensils or equipment specifically reserved for candle making) into the bottom of the jar over the wick. The wax will harden the wick in place while the remainder is melting in the pot.
Step three: Once wax is completely melted stir in 20 (or more depending on your preference) drops of lemon essential oil. Beeswax has a very overpowering scent. It’s smells a bit like honey and to me smells great. You can add more essential oil to mask it if you don’t have a preference for the beeswax scent.
Pour melted candle wax into mold and hold wick in placed with a wooden chopstick. Allow to cool for at least 4 hours or overnight.
I used 2 pounds of beeswax and was able to make a large mason jar candle, medium pillar candle, and multiple smaller candles in small mason jars.

I am eager to try this simple recipe for my friends and family. One quick question, many recipes use palm or coconut oil/shortening to help beeswax not split apart if they cool too quickly after being lit. Any thoughts or ideas on this from anyone?

I just made some of these and WOW the beeswax is hard to cut up! I know you said that it took some muscle but that took… more than that for me… Smells lovely!
