A  handmade gift idea under $5 – homemade peppermint sugar scrub mason jar gifts.

DIY Peppermint Sugar ScrubIf you’ve been a reader for awhile you know that I LOVE homemade sugar scrubs. Seriously, I’m borderline obsessed with them. Especially during the cold winter months. They’re perfect for moisturizing dry hands and cost next to nothing. I also enjoy giving them to friends and family for Christmas since they’re easy to make and look great in a mason jar with ribbon. We all love mason jar gifts right?

Speaking of mason jars, today I’m participating in a mason jar blog hop with a fabulous group of bloggers! Visit the links below for creative holiday mason jar ideas and free printables.

This peppermint sugar scrub recipe smells delightful! The peppermint is perfect for the holiday season and it does wonders to relieve dry hands from the cold. I keep a jar in the kitchen and bathroom at all times, often switching them out by seasonal scents. The peppermint has really put me in the holiday mood! I have my mom and friends hooked on them too, so I can’t wait to give these as Christmas gifts next month.

For this sugar scrub recipe I used coconut oil but you can also use Almond oil or grapeseed oil in place of the coconut. They have great moisturizing properties that will replenish moisture and remove dry skin cells. I’ve also added vitamin e oil, which also helps nourish dry skin.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2-2 cups sugar
  • 1/2-1 cup coconut oil
  • 4-6 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 1 tsp vitamin e oil
  • 1-3 drops red food coloring or soap colorant

Instructions

  • Melt coconut oil in microwave for 30 seconds or until it becomes liquid.
  • Mix in essential oil and vitamin e.
  • Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl.
  • Divide scrub in half and use food coloring in one batch.
  • Fill mason jar by alternating red and white scrub.
  • Store in airtight container.

Notes

When making sugar scrub I recommend starting with 1 1/2 cups of sugar and adding 1/2 cup until you reach the consistency you enjoy the best. I prefer a coarser scrub with not as much oil so 2 1/2 cups of sugar is perfect for me.
Add drops of the peppermint essential oil until desired scent is achieved. I use about 5 drops but you can use a few more if you prefer a stronger scent.

I just have a quick question. Will the food coloring stain your hands when using this scrub?

Thank you.

Hi Kimberly, I haven’t had an issue with it. Try not to add too much color to it, just enough to get a light red color. Hope that helps!

I just now finished making some of this for my sister for Christmas… SO easy, SO fun, and so pretty layered like that in the jar!! I’m 17, never done anything like this before, and I have a tendancy to get frustrated if a new project doesn’t turn out the way I want it to the first time… NO frustration with this. It turned out perfect and pretty! And I used some that was left over in the bowl… let’s just say my sis won’t have the whole jar to herself. xD I love the way it makes my hands feel! I’m totally gonna make some for myself, try other recipes, and make some next year for my church’s craft fair. Thanks so much for this recipe, I had so much fun making it, and I just know my sister will love it!!

Btw, I didn’t put the vitimin E in it, only because I couldn’t find any in the store. Mainly because I didn’t know where to look. But it still turned out great! I uh… ate a little, just cause all the ingrediants are edible…it actually tastes pretty good… xD

Hi Katie, I’m so happy you like the scrub! You can definitely try new scents with essential oils. They’re really easy to make and I think they’d be great for your church’s craft fair. Have a Merry Christmas!

I really love this recipe, it’s so simple and sooooo beautiful! I used pink food colouring instead of red so they’re a pretty pink and white :) Also I divided them into two batches first and used the peppermint on the white sugar, and raspberry on the pink sugar. Smells absolutely divine! Thank you so much for this recipe; I just would never have thought about alternating! It’s such a simple thing but has such a beautiful effect! I would suggest patting each layer down to make sure it layers nicely – I had some initial trouble trying to get the sugar to “sit” hahaha. Once again, thank you so much for this idea! I had a lot of fun and can’t wait to try out other combinations! :)

What size jars are you using for the peppermint sugar scrubs?

Just finished a batch… well, 2! I did a peppermint and a lemon! I used 5 or 6 drops of peppermint but the coconut oil scent still seems to overpower it. Think I will try almond oil next time. I love your recipes!! Thank you!
