One of the things our kids look forward to every school year is collecting Box Tops. Our local schools are part of the Box Tops for education program that help provide funding for programs, supplies, and field trips. The school will often send home a paper each month with a theme that the kids can paste their box tops on. Keeping track of the Box Tops before we get the paper can be a problem for us. We sometimes place them in a ziploc bag, but unfortunately that gets lost at times. Since we’ve already started putting aside Box Tops from products we use for their lunch, I knew I had to come up with a better solution. So ladies, and umm maybe gentlemen, I introduce to you our Box Tops mason jar!

Box Tops Mason Jar

This jar has been great for keeping our tops in one easy to find place. We keep it in the kitchen so that when I’m getting ready to recycle our packages I can quickly cut out the Box Top and place it inside the mason jar. The trick is to use a coin slot mason jar lid, which we love! We’ve been making piggy banks with them for the last year and I knew this would be an easy solution to our problem.

Supplies:

mason jar

Americana multi-surface paint in Flamingo

vinyl

coin slot mason jar lid

ribbon

Step one: apple 2 coats of paint on the mason jar. Allow the first coat to dry completely before applying the second coat. Optional: you can use a fine grit sand paper to distress the paint once it’s completely dry.

step two: use a cutting machine to cut vinyl letters. I’m using this pretty glitter vinyl from Expressions Vinyl. I simply wrote the text in the Cricut software, cut, and then used transfer paper to apply vinyl onto the mason jar.

step three: add the lid and ribbon if desired. I tried to keep the colors matching the box tops by using a pink mason jar with purple and yellow ribbon.

If you child’s school participates in the Box Tops program you may want to check your local Walmart for special cereal boxes and snacks. Select products will have bonus Box Tops labeled on the package. I had my little guy help me pick out the kid’s favorite cereals to stock up for school mornings. We made sure to grab the packs that had the bonus tops so we can help out our schools in every way we can. We’ve been collecting them since my oldest (now in 7th grade) began Kindergarten and I think it’s a wonderful program for schools to be a part of. It’s been great helping our school earn money simply by clipping a label from products we already buy. The money the school collects has been used to fund a lot of great projects and activities at my son’s school over the years. This is a program we plan to participate in for many years to come and with the help of our new mason jar we can keep better track of the Box Tops.
