DIY Parisian Wood Crate

Hi crafty friends! It’s time for another #MichaelsMakers project and I couldn’t be more excited about this month’s theme. Our challenge was to create something inspired by the city of love…Paris! It’s a dream of mine to someday roam the streets of Paris, enjoy a cup of coffee and pastry on a corner cafe while reading a good book. My daughter and I made a pact to visit Paris the summer after her high school graduation. It’s about 12 years from now but I’m already looking forward to it. She’s just as enamored by the city as I am, granted her love of Paris might have something to do with Fancy Nancy.

So when I thought about a Paris inspired project I couldn’t think of anything other than Eiffel tower wall art. I wanted something a little subtler that would match our home decor. This Parisian inspired wood crate is perfect for our home. It adds decor to our living room while working as storage for throw blankets and pillows. Today I’m going to share how you can make your own in a few simple steps. All of my supplies can be found at Michaels, including the crate already assembled.

DIY Wood CrateSupplies:

Wood crate
sand paper
Americana chalky finish paint in Everlasting
Americana French stencil
Americana chalky finish paint in
stencil brush
(4) wood doll head
Gorilla Glue

Step one: sand crate to remove any sharp edges. From experience I’ve noticed that the inside of these crates usually require a little more sanding.

Stenciled crateStep two: Apply two coats of chalky finish paint (allow to dry 30 minutes between coats). It took an entire container of paint to apply two coats and paint the feet.

Step three: use wood Gorilla Glue to attach wooden doll heads as feet. The flat surfaced is glued to the bottom of the crate and the rounded portion becomes the bottom of the feet.

Step four: stencil French words on the side of the crate with a small stenciling brush. Use stencil tape if necessary to hold the stencil in place.French stencil

Our home decor consists mainly of neutral white, grey, and cream and this crate fits in perfectly next to the sofa. With dark hardwood floors and espresso colored couches I try to lighten up the space with a lot of neutrals that help tone things down.
