DIY Embroidery Hoop Christmas Wreath
Embroidery hoops have become increasingly popular to make wreaths out of. The minimalist vibe these easy DIY wreaths give are perfect for keeping things simple. You can add ribbon, greenery, pom poms, flowers, etc. to decorate the wreath to your liking.
For this month’s Michaels Makers challenge, I set out to make a Christmas wreath that reminded me of traditional Christmas décor with a modern twist. I wanted to try my hand at making an embroidery hoop wreath decorated with faux greenery and a flameless candle stick.
The embroidery hoop is 1 inch thick and 14-inches in diameter, making it a sturdy option for adding heavy greenery or decorations to. To give it a natural element, I left the wooden hoop wreath unfinished, but I think it would also look beautiful painted black, red, white or even stained a walnut color.
The trick to creating a realistic looking wreath is to find a greenery pick that has multiple elements. The picks I used had a variety of faux pine needles, mistletoe, pine cones, cotton stems and berries. You will also want to select a pick with small greenery to fill in empty spaces. Don’t be afraid to take apart a pick to hot glue smaller pieces in gaps throughout the wreath.
All of the supplies used to create this wreath are from Michaels. Get inspired by their large selection of wreaths & garlands to create your own Scandinavian inspired Christmas wreath.
Supplies:
- 18-inch embroidery hoop
- Faux greenery picks
- Battery operated candle stick
- Hot glue
How to make an embroidery hoop wreath (video tutorial)
- Select greenery with a variety of pine and berry stems. The bigger the pieces, the less you will need to fill the wreath.
- Wrap floral wire around the stems of two large greenery picks to create a swag to place across the bottom of the embroidery hoop wreath.
- Use hot glue to hold the greenery in place and once it’s set, secure with floral wire to ensure its sturdy.
- Use smaller pieces to cover the stems and continue to add more until desired.
- Add a generous amount of hot glue to the bottom of a battery-operated flameless candle stick and glue to the base of the embroidery hoop. Hold in place until glue has set.
- Hang the wreath using a wreath hanger, a small nail, or wrap clear wire around the top and hang from a hook.
The bright red berries, green stems, and flameless candle stick remind me of classic Christmas décor. It brings back memories of adding a homemade cranberry garland to our fresh Christmas tree. In fact, I think I’ll add making a garland with the kids to our holiday to-do list. In the meantime, I’ll just admire this holiday wreath every time we walk into our home.
