School is back in session for the kids. It’s been wonderful having them home during the break, but I’m ready to start our normal routines back up. Even though it means giving up our slow mornings and late breakfast in pajamas.
I usually start off the first-week making big breakfast meals then slowly progress to finding something quick as we run out the door. Luckily, I have a few favorite recipes that help our mornings run smoothly.
Cinnamon sugar French toast sticks
This delicious kid-friendly breakfast is great for busy mornings when you’re short on time. My kids love this finger-friendly breakfast they can warm up in the air fryer in 5 minutes or less.
A fresh batch can be made in under 10 minutes. It’s a great option for the first day of school breakfast, holiday brunch, or snack whenever you’re craving traditional French toast.
Tips and tricks for this easy recipe
Use day-old slightly stale bread. This is an important step to avoid soggy French toast. Slightly dried-out bread will absorb the egg mixture better and create a soft inside with cinnamon sugar outside.
If you don’t have day-old bread, cut the bread into sticks and layout on the counter for at least an hour.
Keep in mind, the thicker the bread slices are the studier the French toast sticks will be. My kids like dunking their French toast sticks in syrup so I try to make them thicker to avoid being flimsy or fall apart easily.
The best bread for this recipe
Traditionally Texas toast works best. However, it is often hard to find a gluten-free Texas toast loaf in stores. I’m using a gluten-free bread loaf from a local bakery. The thicker and drier the bread the better, but here are some of the other options:
- Sourdough
- Challah
- Brioche
Can air fryer French toast sticks be frozen?
Yes! This recipe can be made ahead and frozen to reheat in the air fryer, oven, or microwave. Once the French toasts are made, allow them to cool then wrap them in an airtight container or bag. If stored properly, frozen French toast sticks can last up to 2 months.
How long do you put frozen French toast in the air fryer?
350° for 5 minutes or until the center is warm. Add more time as needed, starting with 1-2 minutes.
