Hey friends, I have a quick project to share with you today…a Barbie inspired bag for little girls! This Barbie bag is great for taking to the beach or a slumber party. Using Silhouette heat transfer vinyl and a drawstring bag you can make this project in under 20 minutes!

DIY Barbie Applique TutorialHave I ever mentioned that we live on the same street of my mother and father in-law? We bought a house at the opposite end of the cul-de-sac as them. It’s just enough space apart but close enough so that the kids can go over if I want to clean the house without them messing it up a long the way. Kidding. Kind of. ;) Since we live so close by my daughter always wants to take toys and books over while she’s visiting. You would think she’s moving in with all the things she tries to pack! Oh and have I mentioned she loves backpacks and bags too? She has quite the collection going that she uses for her daily trips to grandma’s house.

I recently found this pink drawstring bag at Michael’s for $5. It was a little too plain so I decided to pretty it up a bit with a Barbie applique using Black Silhouette Heat Transfer material.

How to use heat transfer vinyl

DIY Barbie Bag

I began by finding a shape in the Silhouette store that looked similar to the Barbie silhouette. You could flip the image of this shape to have a closer resemblance to the Barbie silhouette but I think it’s cute either way. Note: you normally need to flip the image in the software but I didn’t need to for this particular design. Once I adjusted the shape to the size I needed I fed the heat transfer material into the machine without a cutting mat and cut the shape out. The heat transfer material’s shiny side needs to face down.

Once the shape was cut I placed a cloth over the applique (at this point the shiny side needs to face up) and ironed for about 45 seconds. I then removed the top layer, the “shiny side.” To add a little detail to the Barbie silhouette I added hot fix stones as a ponytail holder. This was the first time I’ve used this tool and now I want to bling out everything in sight!

That’s super cute … my girls would just love it! The blinged-out ponytail really adds a fun touch.
