Create a Christmas mason jar centerpiece in a few easy steps. This mason jar craft is made with DIY Snowy Mason Jars, filled with Christmas greenery, and holiday ribbon. Decorated in a wooden tray, filled with evergreen branches and twinkle lights.

Mason jar crafts are my favorite! They’re easy to make and great for decorating around the holidays. I use mason jars to give gifts like these PEPPERMINT MASON JAR BROWNIES and DIY PEPPERMINT CANDLES. In addition to gift-giving, mason jars make great handmade holiday decorations. A few years ago, I shared my SNOW COVERED MASON JAR CRAFT and was inspired to use the same idea to create a Christmas Mason Jar Centerpiece.

This Christmas decorating idea is made with 3 mason jars in various sizes, faux greenery, and ribbon. The mason jars are covered in a glittery Epsom salt mix that creates the most beautiful glistening snow effect on the jars. You can use the jars in a centerpiece, on a mantel, or tiered tray décor.

Tips and tricks for making snow mason jars

Does the Epsom salt fall off?

  • Yes, some Epsom can fall off if the jars are moved around too much. I’ve had great luck dabbing a thin layer of glue over spots that look a little sparse and sprinkling more Epsom salt back on. I’ve done this with jars I’ve stored from previous years and they look just as new.
One thing I changed about this DIY project is to use equal parts glitter and Epsom salt. The glitter helps ensure the jars glisten even if some of the Epsom salt falls off.

How do you prevent the Epsom salt from falling off?

  • Once the glue is dry, spray a sealant over the jars to help prevent the Epsom salt from falling off. Some may still fall off, especially if they’re moved around, but it will help lessen the amount. If you have time and a little patience, then you can work in sections to add a thicker layer of glue to the jar. The thicker coating helps the Epsom stay put a little sturdier.
  • The issue with this method is that you will need to wait until one side is completely dry before adding glue to the next section. If the glue is applied too thick, the Epsom salt may slide down the jar before it’s completely dry. So, with a little time and patience, this method can work. The thicker layer will also make your jars more opaque; the end result will depend on your personal preference.

Where to find Christmas greenery

  • I get this question a lot and I recommend checking your local craft store first. The craft stores always have the best selection of faux picks early on in the season. If you’re planning to use real greenery, then Trader Joe’s is my go-to. They often have beautiful bundles of evergreen branches and floral picks. Local tree farms may also have extra branches for free.

  • In a small bowl, combine half a cup of glitter with half a cup of Epsom salt.
  • Brush a thin layer of glue around the mason jar. If the glue is applied too thick, the salts will start to drip down while it’s drying.
  • Sprinkle the glitter Epsom salt mix over the glue and place it on a covered surface to dry. Allow 12-24hours to dry completely before decorating.
  • Tie a bow around the mouth of the jar using a festive ribbon.
  • Optional: add a battery-operated tealight inside the jar.
  • Fill the jars with greenery and red berries. You can use real or faux greenery for this project. Tip: trim the stems short enough so they don’t show through the jars, but not too short so they will stay upright.
  • Place on a wooden tray and decorate with real evergreen branches. Add some sparkle by intertwining a string of twinkle lights under the greenery.
