How to make candy cane sleighs {VIDEO TUTORIAL}
- After making this Christmas candy craft many times over the years, I’ve learned a few tips and tricks to make the cutest candy sleighs for kids. The two best options when making this candy sleigh craft is to use heavy-duty double-sided tape or a low temp glue gun. The double-sided tape that works best is the one you would use for scrapbooking. Regular double-sided tape is just not strong enough to keep the candy together. Strong double-sided tape is perfect when making this craft with kids.
- A low-temp glue gun will also work, but you will need to be careful not to damage the candy wrapper in the process. This option is best suited for older kids or for a parent. If you decide to use a low temp glue gun, a small dot or two is all you will need. The glue gun does provide a sturdier option than the tape and is best for attaching the candy canes to the bottom of the KitKat candy bar.
Assembling the candy sleighs
- Small square and rectangle-shaped chocolate candy bars work best for stacking on top of the sleigh. Add as many layers as you’d like, decreasing the number of candy bars as you work your way up. I like to add two rows of 3 to start with and then decrease the amount as we work our way up, leaving a small space in the front for Santa. Around the holidays you can find the mini candy bars in festive colors and designs. Hershey’s are great for stacking side by side and Dove candy in the holiday gift foil wrapper makes a great topper.
- The main guy driving the sled is a Santa candy bar that stands upright. You can find these in the holiday candy aisle or specialty stores like See’s candy. Lindt chocolate has a cute Santa candy we like to use and also an adorable elf chocolate bar.
- Use a holiday ribbon to wrap around the candy sleigh before adding a mini Christmas bow on top. I like using this GOLD STAR RIBBON. Note: you can wrap the ribbon around the candy bars before adding the candy canes or around the entire sleigh. There’s no wrong way to do it. Just use what you can find and have fun assembling the sleighs.
