Painted confetti star mason jar lanterns made with Sharpie Paint markers.

Hanging Mason Jar LanternEvery summer we have an annual backyard campout with the kids. This is one of our favorite summertime traditions. It began when my oldest was 6 and wanted to go camping as summer was coming to an end. Since I was 8 months pregnant on bed rest with Madilynn camping wasn’t an option. He was so bummed that we could’t go and I of course felt an array of emotions about how his life as a single child was going to change in a few short weeks. After talking to my husband we decided to have a day filled with all of Jay’s favorite activities and a camp out in the backyard. The boys spent the afternoon playing outdoor games, setting up a tent, and we ended the night by making s’mores on the fire pit before they camped out in the tent. Jay thought it was the best day ever! Since then we’ve made it a tradition to camp out in the backyard. Every year we add new activities, crafts, and invite cousins over. This year we plan to make star mason jar lanterns to carry around while they participate in a nighttime scavenger hunt. I can’t wait to see them run around the yard with their lanterns!

Please note the kids will NOT have a candle inside their jars. All of our flameless tea lights were out when I photographed this project so I had to improvise. :)

Patriotic Mason Jar LanternsFor this project we used the new Sharpie Paint markers. You guys, these markers are the best! They dry almost immediately and the paint doesn’t run. We waited about a minute before adding a second color and didn’t have any issues with the colors running together. You can find Sharpie Paint pens at Michaels stores along with the other supplies needed to make this project.

Supplies:

  • Sharpie Paint markers
  • mason jars
  • star punch
  • vinyl
  • ribbon

Mason Jar Star LanternStep one: Use the punch to cut out vinyl star stickers.

Step two: add “confetti” by pressing small dots around the star sticker. Continue to switch colors and layer more dots with the markers.

Star Mason JarsStep three: once the paint has dried remove sticker and tie ribbon around the jar.

Star Mason Jar LanternsMadilynn helped make this pink, purple, and silver confetti star lantern. She can’t wait to use it next week! The plan is to use a variety of shaped punches along with their creativity to draw designs onto the mason jars.
