Add some creepy Zombie cupcakes to your Halloween party food table or Zombie party with this easy recipe. These chocolate Zombie cupcakes are made with chocolate frosting, red icing blood dripping down the top, bloody candy bones, and a green zombie hand reaching out of the dirt.

I love making Halloween cupcakes with the kids. It’s always fun to watch them decorate their cupcakes with colorful sprinkles in festive shapes. This year we decided to try our hand at making some creepy zombie cupcakes and they were a big hit!

Zombie Hand Cupcakes

This Halloween cupcake idea would fit perfectly for an older kid Halloween party or a Zombie birthday party.

The chocolate cupcakes are made using the same recipe from our GRAVEYARD CUPCAKES and topped with a rich chocolate buttercream frosting. We crushed OREO cookies in a Ziploc bag to make crumbs for the dirt. Once the cupcakes were frosted, the cookie crumbs were sprinkled on top then bloody candy bones were gently pressed onto the frosting. The star of the show is the green zombie hand sticking out of the top of the dirt. We then used red icing to create “blood drips” around the hand. So creepy!

How to make Halloween Zombie Cupcakes (VIDEO TUTORIAL)

These were definitely the creepiest Halloween treat we’ve made, but we had a fun time making them. Now, I don’t think we’re ready to watch anything spookier than Hocus Pocus, but we will be enjoying some spooky treats this Halloween!

Chocolate Cupcakes

  • 1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

Chocolate Frosting

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 1/2 cups confectioners sugar
  • 2-4 tbsp milk
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • pinch of salt

Zombie decorations

  • Zombie hand icing decorations
  • 1/4 cup bone sprinkles
  • 3/4 cup OREO cookie crumbs
  • red icing gel

Instructions

Chocolate Cupcakes

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Prepare baking pans with cupcake liners.
  • Combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a stand mixer or large bowl.
  • Add eggs, one at a time. Stir in milk, oil, and vanilla until well combined.
  • Stir in boiling water and mix thoroughly.
  • Pour into baking pans, filling cups 3/4 full. Bake 22-25 minutes. Cool completely before decorating.

Chocolate Frosting

  • Use a hand mixer or stand mixer to beat room temperature butter until creamy.
  • Add confectioners sugar, cocoa powder, milk, vanilla, and salt. Beat until frosting is smooth. Add 1tbsp of milk at a time to thin out the frosting, or 1/4 cup confectioners sugar to thicken the frosting until desired consistency.

Decorate Zombie Cupcakes

  • Cover the cupcake frosting with cookie crumbs. Top with a green zombie hand icing decoration, bone sprinkles, and create blood drips with red gel icing.
